We started digging into all of the types of things that creators can do on Gumroad, from profile tweaks to social account linking, from different types of products to what goes in them, from changing your colors to staying in touch. When we started comparing the habits of the top 100 creators on Gumroad to all our active creators, the numbers started screaming at us.
So let’s take a look at these, the 15 habits of highly effective creators.
1-6) Who are you?
When it comes to setting up a profile, essentially everything is optional. You don’t have to have a profile photo, a displayed name and bio, or even a username. But should you? Of course, if you’re using overlay and integrating your products in your site, this might be less important to you, but here’s what we found.
Keep this in mind: creating a username gives you a creator profile page with a URL, further equipped with social links and a follow button. Additionally, you can then create an Audience page to help build your email list.
7-10) If you build it…
Have you given something away to inspire purchases on a paid product? Do you offer pay what you want on your products ($0+, $3+, $10+)? Do you offer your ebook in multiple formats? Check out what the highest-grossing Gumroad creators have done.
11) Share the love
Many Gumroad creators start off as buyers (and some even go on to work at Gumroad). The notion that this community exists where we all support each other is, woo, the warm and fuzzies are flowing. So how many Gumroad creators have also bought or downloaded the work of someone else?
12-13) Make it your own
Have you tried adjusting your highlight and background colors or adding a background image? It’s the quickest way to match your work to your brand and your brand to your work. Go ahead. Dress up a little.
14) Stay in touch
Making a sale isn’t the end. Maybe there’s an update to your product. And what about when you’ve got your next project published? Staying in touch with your audience is a huge part of what can take selling stuff from a gig to a career. Have you reached out to your buyers and followers?
